Whitewater Downtown Loop — Indian Mounds + Creek Trail
- Distance: Approx. 2.5 to 3.5 miles
- Surface: Paved sidewalk + paved trail
- Difficulty: Easy
- Trailhead: Downtown Whitewater (Main Street or Cravath Lakefront Park)
About this route
This is the easiest “see the town” run in Whitewater. About half the loop runs on the Whitewater Trail, which follows Whitewater Creek and crosses pedestrian bridges. The trail skirts Indian Mounds Park (also called Whitewater Effigy Mounds Preserve), a 21.5-acre site with 12 (possibly 13) Native American effigy mounds dating to 200–1200 AD, each with an interpretive sign.
It’s part of the city’s official “Downtown Loop” walking route, documented on the printable walking map from the Whitewater Chamber of Commerce.
Variations
- Short urban loop (~2.5 mi): downtown → Whitewater Trail → Indian Mounds Park → return
- Extended version (~3.5 mi): include the 1-mile Whitewater High School Educational Treeway, then return down Walworth Avenue
- Lake-to-mounds (~3 mi): start at Cravath Lakefront Park, take the Whitewater Trail south, loop through Indian Mounds, return
What to know before you go
- Paved throughout — runnable in winter when trail surfaces are snow-covered.
- Well-lit on the downtown sections; less so on the Whitewater Trail spurs.
- Multiple bench / water-fountain points downtown.
- The mounds are protected — stay on marked paths.
- Printable walking map: search “Whitewater walking map” on the Whitewater Chamber site.
Why we run here
It’s the route for anyone new to running, anyone with a stroller, anyone in winter when trail surfaces are bad, and anyone who wants to feel like they live in their town for a moment. It’s also the easiest route to bring a non-runner along for a walk while the rest of the group runs.
